What the World Cup Taught Me About Law Firm Profitability

On July 3, I had the opportunity to watch Colombia take on Ghana in Kansas City, Missouri, during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

And I have to say, it was an experience I will remember for a long time.

The game itself was a lot of fun. The crowd was loud, the energy was high, and being around the World Cup festivities made the entire moment feel bigger than just one match. From the stadium atmosphere to the excitement around the city, it was one of those experiences where you can feel how much the moment matters.

Colombia won the match 1–0, and while the score may look simple on paper, the game was full of intensity. Every possession mattered. Every mistake had the potential to change the outcome. Every opportunity felt important.

And as I watched that match, I could not help but think about how much the same thing applies to running a law firm.

Because whether you are on the field or leading a firm, winning usually comes down to preparation, strategy, timing, teamwork, and execution.

The Energy Was Bigger Than the Score

If you only looked at the final score, you would see Colombia 1, Ghana 0.

But if you were in the stadium, you experienced something much bigger than that.

The crowd was full of energy. Colombian fans brought music, color, chants, and excitement that made the match feel almost like a home game for Colombia. Ghana’s supporters brought pride and passion too. Every possession felt important because in a knockout-stage match, one mistake or one opportunity can change everything.

That is one of the things I love about sports. The scoreboard tells you the result, but it does not always tell you the full story.

The same is true in business.

When you look at a law firm’s revenue number, profit margin, or cash balance, you are only seeing part of the story. Behind those numbers are decisions, systems, people, habits, missed opportunities, and moments where the owner either had clarity or was forced to guess.

A law firm can look successful from the outside and still be struggling behind the scenes.

That is why the deeper story matters.

Colombia Did Not Need to Do Everything

Colombia did not win by scoring four or five goals.

They won by creating the right opportunity, taking advantage of it, and staying disciplined enough to protect the lead.

That stood out to me because many law firm owners feel pressure to do everything at once.

More marketing, hiring, technology, meetings, content, practice areas, clients ...

But more is not always the answer. Sometimes the better question is:

What is the right move right now?

For a law firm owner, the right move might be improving the intake process. It might be understanding which practice areas are actually profitable. It might be cleaning up the financial reports. It might be adjusting pricing. It might be defining team roles more clearly.

The point is not to do everything.

The point is to know which strategy gives you the best chance to move forward.

“More is not always the answer. Sometimes the better question is: What is the right move right now?”

That Inspired the Law Firm World Cup Series

After being around the World Cup energy in Kansas City, I started thinking even more about how strategy works in business.

In soccer, every team comes in with a game plan. But once the match starts, that plan gets tested.

The same thing happens in law firms.

A profitability strategy may sound good in theory, but the real question is:

  • Does it hold up when the firm is busy?

  • Does it help when cash flow is tight?

  • Does it work when the team is stretched?

  • Does it create stronger margins, better decisions, or more control?

That is why we created the Law Firm World Cup Series.

This July, we are putting 16 profitability strategies into a World Cup-style tournament.

Over the next few weeks, those strategies will go head to head until one strategy is crowned the 2026 Law Firm World Cup Champion.

Here is how the tournament works:

Round of 16: The 16 strategies play in 8 single-elimination matches.

Quarter-finals: The 8 winning strategies from the previous round face off.

Semi-finals: The 4 remaining strategies compete to reach the final.

The Final: The remaining two strategies play for the 2026 Law Firm World Cup trophy.

And this week, the Round of 16 is already live.

That means the first 16 strategies are officially on the field, and we are starting to see which ones have the strongest case for helping law firm owners improve profitability.

One Strong Move Can Change the Game

In the Colombia vs. Ghana match, one goal changed everything.

Once Colombia scored, Ghana had to respond. Colombia had to stay focused. The pressure shifted, and the match became a test of whether Colombia could manage the advantage they had created.

That happens in business all the time.

  • One decision can change the direction of a firm.

  • One weak pricing model can quietly drain profit.

  • One unclear role can create constant frustration.

  • One disconnected financial report can keep the owner from seeing what is really happening.

But the opposite is also true.

  • One better dashboard can create clarity.

  • One improved intake process can increase conversion.

  • One strategic hire can free up the owner’s time.

  • One stronger pricing decision can improve profitability.

  • One focused plan can help a firm move from reacting to leading.

That is what makes this Law Firm World Cup Series interesting.

Every strategy in the tournament can help a law firm in some way. But when we put them head to head, we get to ask a better question:

Which strategy creates the strongest path to profitability?

Why Law Firm Owners Should Follow Along

Over the next few weeks, we will be comparing profitability strategies in a way that is practical, easy to follow, and hopefully a little entertaining too.

You will see strategies compete based on things like:

  • How quickly they can impact profitability.

  • How realistic they are for busy law firm owners.

  • How much control they give the owner.

  • How they affect cash flow, pricing, staffing, systems, and decision-making.

  • Which types of firms may benefit most from each strategy.

The goal is not just to pick a winner.

The goal is to help law firm owners identify which strategies may be worth paying attention to in their own firms.

The right strategy at the right time can change the game.

Winning Requires Discipline After the Big Moment

Scoring first is important, but it does not end the game.

After Colombia took the lead, they still had to keep playing. They had to defend. They had to manage pressure. They had to avoid unnecessary mistakes. They had to stay locked in until the final whistle.

That is a powerful business lesson.

Many law firm owners work hard to create momentum, but the real challenge is keeping it.

It is one thing to have a strong revenue month. It is another thing to understand why it happened.

It is one thing to sign several new clients. It is another thing to know whether those clients are profitable.

It is one thing to hire more people. It is another thing to make sure the team has the structure, systems, and accountability needed to perform well.

Growth is not just about getting ahead. It is about knowing how to manage the lead.

What Law Firm Owners Can Learn From the World Cup

Watching Colombia vs. Ghana reminded me that winning is rarely accidental.

Whether you are on the field or running a law firm, winning usually comes from a combination of clarity, preparation, teamwork, timing, and execution.

For law firm owners, that means asking better questions:

Do I know which parts of my firm are actually profitable?

Do I understand where cash flow pressure is coming from?

Do I have the right people in the right roles?

Do I know which marketing efforts are producing quality clients?

Do I have a clear strategy, or am I just reacting to whatever feels urgent?

Those questions matter because a busy law firm is not always a profitable law firm.

The goal is not just to keep moving. The goal is to move in the right direction.
